FAQ

Australian grants, questions answered

Are there really grants for farmers in Australia?

Yes — agricultural funding in Australia is unusually generous and unusually scattered. Rural assistance authorities, primary industries departments, catchment management bodies and philanthropic trusts all run their own programs, on their own timelines, separately from bodies like AusIndustry and Austrade. The hard part isn't whether funding exists — it's finding the programs you qualify for and getting the application in before the round closes.

Do grants have to be paid back?

No — a genuine grant is non-dilutive and non-repayable, as long as you meet the program's conditions and reporting requirements. Read the instrument carefully in agricultural funding specifically: some of the largest headline figures for drought support are concessional loans, not grants, and the two are very different commitments.

Do I need an ABN to apply for a farm grant?

Almost always, yes — and most programs also apply a primary producer test, which differs by program and by state (turnover thresholds, the share of your income from farming, and whether farming is your main business all come into it). Family trusts and partnerships are common in agriculture, and some programs require the ABN to sit with the specific operating entity. The Grantiv finder factors your business type into the match.

Is the Grantiv grant finder free?

Yes — tell Grantiv what you want to fund and what your organisation does. Your strongest current match is shown immediately. A work email reveals the remaining redacted matches and keeps the search on file.

How does Grantiv match my farm to grants?

Grantiv reads what your business actually does — where you farm, what you produce, your size and your goal — and matches you against current Australian grant programs, scoring each on how well it fits. Instead of scrolling listings scattered across rural assistance authorities, primary industries departments and catchment bodies, you see the handful that are genuinely relevant to your operation.

What funding exists for drought and disaster resilience?

It's the largest and most active category of agricultural funding, and the grant-versus-loan distinction matters most here. Queensland's Drought Preparedness Grants fund up to $50,000 in on-farm capital works to make a property more drought-ready, and Victoria's Farm Drought Support Grants provide $5,000 to $10,000 for drought management. A lot of the largest-sounding figures in this category — concessional loans of up to $500,000 in some states — are borrowings, not grants, so check the instrument before the amount.

Can I get help paying for eID tags and traceability equipment?

Often, yes. When a compliance requirement changes — like the move to electronic identification for sheep and farmed goats — governments frequently subsidise the equipment needed to meet it. South Australia's Expanded eID Device Rebates are the current example. Rebate programs like this are among the easiest funding to get, because they're assessed on eligibility rather than competitively, and among the most missed, because they're announced through industry channels rather than grant portals.

What is the R&D Tax Incentive and does it apply to a farm business?

Yes, if you operate through an incorporated company and the work meets the R&D Tax Incentive's tests. It gives companies with turnover under $20 million a refundable tax offset of 43.5% on eligible R&D — paid as a cash refund even if you're pre-profit. Agricultural R&D counts if it's genuinely experimental (new pest-control methods, novel irrigation techniques, breeding trials) rather than routine farm management. You need to register your activities with AusIndustry within 10 months of your income year-end.

Can Landcare groups and other rural not-for-profits get grants?

Yes. Landcare groups, catchment management bodies and other rural not-for-profits are active recipients of government, philanthropic and corporate community funding across Australia. Grantiv matches your organisation to relevant programs the same way it does for farm businesses.

Does Grantiv apply for the grant for me?

Grantiv helps you find the grants that fit, and the Application Writer helps you draft the application with the grant criteria in view. You stay in control and submit through the official government portal — always confirm the current round, eligibility and deadlines on the grant's official page before applying.
